Inside the Experience
El Castillo Market & Restaurant, nestled at 9735 Old St Augustine Rd in Jacksonville, FL, stands out as a genuine gem for lovers of authentic Mexican cuisine. From the moment you step inside, the welcoming atmosphere invites you to feel at home, a sentiment echoed by many patrons. The restaurant’s commitment to freshness shines through every dish, most notably in their Birria tacos, which come beautifully served with three soft tacos accompanied by vibrant, flavorful salsa and perfectly crisp chips. This salsa, bursting with authentic, fresh ingredients, is a clear departure from anything store-bought, adding a distinctive depth to the meal.
The menu offers a rich variety of traditional Mexican staples that resonate with both aficionados and newcomers. Customers rave about the tamales, pupusas, and tacos, with special mention of the crunchy, freshly cooked chicharrones—a delightful blend of crunchy fat under the skin and tender meat that brings a unique Dominican-Mexican fusion experience. The sour cream served alongside elevates the flavors, enhancing the overall taste profile.
Service at El Castillo is marked by warmth and sincerity, even if occasionally a bit slow during busy times, which only adds to the feeling of a local, family-owned establishment that prides itself on quality rather than rush. The adjacent market space, offering fresh meats and groceries, reinforces the authenticity and freshness that the kitchen promises.
What truly captivates me about El Castillo Market & Restaurant is the balance of rich, traditional flavors with fair prices—making it a destination not just for a meal but for a memorable culinary experience rooted in Mexican heritage. Whether you are craving tacos that remind you of home or eager to explore new dishes like pupusas, this spot invites you to savor the genuine essence of Mexican cooking in the heart of Jacksonville.
“ I ordered the Birria tacos meal which comes with 3 tacos. The salsa and chips were fresh and delicious. The salsa was amazing and flavorful. I really liked it! It didn’t tase like jarred salsa. The service was a little slow to have 4 tables . My waitress was super sweet! This will be my go to Mexican restaurant. I really liked this place. They have a little grocery store on the side with a meat market and pastries options. ”
“ Real authentic Mexican food at great prices! They make you feel at home the minute you walk in. A little knowledge of Spanish would be good, but isn't necessary. Try the tamales and pupusas! ”
“ Great tacos the best since I been living on this side of town since 2019. Always take other people they love it too especially their sour cream. Love their freshly cooked crunchy Chicharrones with a the fat under skin and chunky meat at end. Like a Dominican style Mexican joint. ”
